Carré aux artistes
The "artists square" is composed of:• the painters, who use pictorial techniques (oil, acrylics, watercolours, applique' ....)
• portraitists ( pencil, charcoal, pastels…)
• caricaturists (humourous portraits)
• silhouettists (your profile cut with scissors)
This artists square has been regulated and managed by the Mairie of Paris since 1980.
The square is divided into 149 numbered places, allotted to 298 artists, all authorized to practice their profession on Place du Tertre. The imposed rules are to ensure original works are exhibited. It is a guarantee of authenticity and uniqueness of the work.
Each place is shared by two artists of the same category.
• 79 places allotted to painters which are shared by 158 painters
• 70 places allotted to portraitists, caricaturists and silhouettists
As every place is shared between two artists, you can see maximum of 149 easels at the same time. Every visit you'll discover the work of different artists.
During the high season from April to November, the terraces of the cafés and restaurants occupy the centre .of the square so the artists are situated around the edges of the square. (see map)
From November to April the terraces are removed and the artists have the entire square at their disposal to display their easels
• The portraits painters (pink on the map)
If you would like a portrait or caricature – visit the portraitists area (indicated in pink on the map)
You'll be astonished at the large diversity of techniques on offer and amazed at the likeness of the portraits, the humour of the caricaturists, and the precision of the silhouettists
• The painters (yellow on the map)
These professional artists work outdoors. You can witness the creation of a painting and discover the techniques, styles, and colours on their palettes.
It is a unique and spectacular show. Do not miss it if you come to Paris.
Place du Tertre in Montmartre is today the biggest open air gallery of artists studios in the world.
